“Always vigilant”: Guatemala deploys new “citizen security” military squadrons
In Guatemala, President Pérez Molina stated that the National Civil Police “does not have the necessary agents to provide adequate security to Guatemalans.”
Rather than provide training or funding to the civil police, Pérez Molina has deployed 1,500 permanent soldiers as “citizen security” squadrons, covering Escuintla, Suchitepequez, Santa Rosa, Zacapa, Izabal, Chiquimula, Huehuetenango, Quiché, and Alta Verapaz.

El presidente Otto Pérez reconoció que “la PNC no tiene los agentes necesarios para brindar seguridad adecuada a los guatemaltecos”. Según el mandatario, se hace el esfuerzo para incrementar las fuerzas encargadas de la seguridad, por medio del Ejército.
Agregó que los tres escuadrones tienen la capacidad de atender a otros departamentos. “Cuentan con cuadros de oficiales que son los responsables de comandar cada una de las unidades”, explicó el mandatario.
Siempre vigilantes
De acuerdo con el gobernante, el escuadrón asignado a Escuintla velará por las necesidades de Suchitepéquez y Santa Rosa; el de Zacapa cubrirá Izabal y Chiquimula, y el de Huehuetenango, Quiché y Alta Verapaz.
Ulises Anzueto, ministro de la Defensa, señaló que el costo de los tres escuadrones asciende a más de Q119 millones, y que a cada uno se le han asignado seis camiones, 14 picops y 10 motocicletas.

Encuentran Cadáveres de Tres Activistas
Eran dirigentes del Frente de Unidad Popular. Se trata de Arturo Hernández Cardona, Félix Bandera Román y Ángel Ramírez. Cuatro de los levantados lograron escapar y uno de ellos narró lo vivido durante cuatro días.
El asesinato de tres dirigentes sociales provocó la toma del ayuntamiento de Iguala por parte de activistas del Frente de Unidad Popular (FUP), que responsabilizan al alcalde José Luis Abarca Velázquez del levantón que las víctimas sufrieron la noche del jueves 30 de mayo.
A las 07:30 horas de la mañana, en la colonia Valerio Trujano, de la comunidad de Xalitla, se reportó el hallazgo de tres cuerpos tirados sobre el asfalto con un mensaje rotulado en cartulina.
Personal de la Policía Investigadora Ministerial, de la Preventiva Estatal y de la Federal se trasladaron al sitio ubicado sobre la carretera federal Chilpancingo-Iguala, para acompañar a peritos de la Procuraduría General de Justicia y al agente del Ministerio Público del Fuero Común en el levantamiento.
Al Semefo llegó Sofía Lorena Barrera Mendoza, regidora de Desarrollo Rural en el cabildo de Iguala y pareja sentimental de Arturo Hernández Cardona, el principal dirigente de la UP y fundador de la Unión Campesina Emiliano Zapata (UCEZ).
Aunque el cuerpo del dirigente tenía más de 48 horas sin vida y presentaba huellas de tortura, la mujer lo reconoció inmediatamente. Luego observó a las otras dos víctimas y con seguridad señaló que se trataba de Félix Rafael Bandera Román y Angel Román Ramírez, de la FUP.
Al lugar llegó un grupo de dirigentes del PRD, entre ellos el integrante de la Comisión Política de Izquierda Democrática Nacional (IDN) en Guerrero, David Molina Francisco, quien también confirmó la identidad de los dirigentes sociales.
Los tres cuerpos presentaban huellas de tortura e impactos de bala en diferentes partes, lo que fue informado a los activistas, que desde las 09:00 marcharon sobre avenida Bandera Nacional hasta llegar a la plaza de las Tres Garantías.
Cuatro escaparon
La historia comenzó la noche del jueves 30 de mayo, cuando ocho integrantes de la UP fueron víctimas de un levantón tras realizar un bloqueo en la autopista que va hacia Cuernavaca.
La mañana del viernes Arturo Hernández invitó a varios de sus compañeros a respaldarlo en la ratificación de una denuncia penal contra el presidente municipal, quien lo habría amenazado de muerte, pero no profundizó en los detalles.
Hernández y sus siete acompañantes no llegaron a la cita y por eso desde esa tarde sus compañeros denunciaron la desaparición.
David Molina Francisco, compañero de corriente de Hernández, dijo que cuatro de los levantados el 30 de mayo lograron escapar a sus captores y uno de ellos, Héctor Arrollo Delgado, narró parte de lo que vivieron durante el tiempo en que fueron secuestrados por un grupo de presuntos sicarios.
Héctor Arroyo dijo que Hernández fue asesinado desde el viernes 31, en tanto que los otros dos fueron abatidos en el transcurso del fin de semana.
Todavía queda en calidad de desaparecido un activista de nombre Jaime Castrejón, Delgado no supo establecer si se le recapturo o se mantiene oculto en algún lugar.
El sobreviviente dio a conocer su interés de irse de Guerrero para evitar que sus captores lo maten, ya que logró escapar por un descuido y asume que estarán interesados en silenciarlo.
